CLUE is a claims-information report generated by LexisNexis®, a consumer-reporting agency. The report generally contains up to seven years of personal-auto and personal-property claims history.

What a CLUE report contains

The report contains the following claim information provided by your insurance company:

Your name

Date of birth

Policy number

Date of loss

Type of loss

Amount the company paid

Description of the covered property

Property address for homeowner claims or specific vehicle information for auto claims

How insurance companies use CLUE reports

An insurer may request a CLUE report when you apply for coverage or request a quote. The company uses your claims history, or the history of claims at a specific property, to decide if it’ll offer you coverage and how much you’ll pay. Insurance company studies show a relationship between past claims and claims you report in the future.

The CLUE Report and the insurance scoring system provided by Choicepoint (a Division of LexisNexis / Reed Elsevier PLC) is a claims history database created by ChoicePoint that enables insurance companies to access consumer claims information when they are underwriting or rating an insurance policy.

Insurers utilize personal information in the CLUE Report for Personal Property to decide your risk profile (e.g., how likely you are to file a claim against your policy).  Insurance companies that contribute loss data to the Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (C.L.U.E.) can withdraw information from the exchange. In addition, some insurance agents, with the authority of the company they represent, can withdraw data.

Your consumer report file in the Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) contains personal claim information provided by insurance companies; it also includes policy information such as name, date of birth, policy number, and claim information including date of loss, type of loss and amounts paid, and a description of the property covered.  For homeowner’s coverage, the the CLUE Report for Personal Property contains the property address, and for auto coverage, it includes specific vehicle information.

As a warning, all consumers should be aware that merely contacting their insurance company or their insurance agent to discuss an actual loss might be considered reporting a claim, even if the company does not end up making a claim payment. This is because when a loss occurs, the policy requires the company to take specific actions within specified time frames.
